Stal surges, stuns Kaymer - and the world

Greg Norman may have suffered a horrible collapse at the 1996 Masters, while Jean van de Velde will be forever linked to his loss at the 1999 Open Championship.

But on Sunday at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, Martin Kaymer suffered a collapse for the ages.

Twice, Kaymer had to take unplayable lies. He botched a chip at 13th green and wound up taking triple-bogey.

The two-time major champion had a 10-shot lead at one point during the final round, but the proverbial wheels fell off over the final 14 holes. Kaymer was the only player in the top 20 on the leaderboard to shoot over par, carding a horrendous 75.

Instead, it was 22-year-old Frenchman Gary Stal who snuck up on the field by following up rounds of 68, 69, and 67 with a Sunday 65 to capture his first European Tour victory. Not even Rory McIlroy's 66 was quite enough to overcome Stal's birdie-fest. Kaymer finished two shots back of Stal, with the outstanding Frenchman Victor Dubuisson another shot adrift.
