Steve Turner a.k.a. sturner50
How old are you and what's your occupation?
45 yrs old and Law Enforcement Detective

When did you start playing golf and what's your handicap?
I never even picked up a club until June 2009. From about the age of 35 years old, I wanted to try golf but I never did for various reasons. In June 2009, I borrowed some clubs and had a friend go with me to a local driving range. I got bit by the golf bug and admit I am addicted to the game. My handicap is 31 for now. But, I gaurantee it will be much lower in another year.

How often do you play?
I play at least once a week.

Tell me about a great shot you've made.
I was in the fairway, about 25 yards from the hole, when I chipped in for a birdie. It was a par 4.

Tell me about a time your SkyCaddie has saved you strokes?
I always use my SkyCaddie and the more I use it the more useful it is. It seems that on a regular basis my SkyCaddie saves me from myself. I was playing an unfamiliar course where there was water in front of me. I was thinking my 120 yard club would carry the water. I set up to my ball then decided I better double check the SkyCaddie. I saw that It was 140 yards to carry. I then got my 150 club and took a confident swing. I carried the water and my partners thought I was "the man." At least until they out drove me on the next tee shot.

What is your best golf memory?
In November 2009, my wife and I were in Reno, NV. We went to Wolf Run Golf Course to play around. There was a light snow the night before so we were delayed about an hour. They finally let us get out there, as the snow was melting fairly fast, but they warned us that some holes still had snow. Our first four holes had snow on the tee, fairways and greens. We had a blast! Snow golf is fun with the right attitude.

What is your "home" course?
Shandin Hills in San Bernardino, CA

What ball do you play?
Callaway HX Hot Plus

Clubs?
Callaway X18R

Favorite pro?
Tom Watson is truly an inspiration to me. What is he? 60 years old? Need I say more? Of course Tiger has to be the most exciting player to watch. But Tom Watson inspires me.

Favorite course you've played?
Oak Quarry in Riverside, CA.

Dream course you've yet to play?
Pebble Beach

Best round ever- and what course?
I shot a 101 at Somersett Country Club. This is a private course that I was able to play. I know 101 is nothing to brag about. But, I hit 9/14 fairways, pared 5 holes and had 7 GIR's. As far as tempo and swing, I try to duplicate how I played at Somersett.

What is one aspect of your golf game you would like to improve on in the next year?
Let's see.... putting, chipping, bunker shots, drives... Oh, I'm sorry. You said "one" aspect. Right now I am happy with my 200 yard average drive. I am currently concentrating on my irons and wedges, especially my short game, inside of 75 yards .

Tell me a story.
I already mentioned that I started golfing in June 2009. I started because, to my objection, I was added on a foursome for an upcoming best ball tournament. I was told, "Dont worry. You'll have a good time. It's best ball!" I didn't want to make a complete fool of myself so thought I would borrow some clubs, hits some balls, play in the tournament, return the clubs, and go back to life as I once knew it. Like I said, I got bit by the bug. Not wanting to spend a ton of money, I went to a swap meet and found a set of clubs. I mean a really old set. The driver (a #1 wood) was made of wood. The first time I played with them, my buddies almost died laughing and making fun of me. But it didn't stop me. I even out drove them on some of the tee shots.

A couple weeks later, I went out to play by myself. My wife wanted to come along. I saw no harm and figured she could drive the cart for me as I wanted to focus on my swing, etc. As a matter of fact, up until this point my wife believed that "golf is not a sport." None the less, we went out, she drove, and she watched me struggle through 18 holes. She now admits that while watching me, she could not understand what was so hard about hitting a little ball that does not move. A few days later she went with me to the range. While there she took a couple swings. As we all could figure, she too became a victim of the golf bug.

She now spends more money on golf than I do.

Thanks!

Hi Steve: enjoyed reading your story. your story is very similar to mine. Starting playing last year, March 2009, after putting it off for at least 16 years. I'm 52 and I've got the bug real bad. I was NEVER a morning person. now I wake up before the sun rises and I'm on my way to the golf course to squeeze in a 9 hole before going to work. Keep on keepin' on!, cuz I am!
