Your missing out on some cool charts...
Jeff Couch a.k.a. jeffcouch
Meet Jeff Couch. The single digit handicapper recently won the Hogan Flight in the 2011 Am Tour Senior National Championship in California. After reading his GoW profile, I'm thinking I need to play on the Am Tour because it sounds awesome! Enjoy.
How old are you and what's your occupation? I am 51 years old. I am a retired Command Sergeant Major from the U.S. Army and currently work as an Intelligence Analyst for a government organization. When did you start playing golf and what's your handicap? I have hacked around with golf for over 20 years but really got serious about it about 14 years ago. My current handicap is around 5. How often do you play? I play at least twice a week and try to get to the range at least once a week. Tell me about a great shot you made at the Senior National Championship. It was more a best hole than a shot. On the last day of the tournament, I had a pretty good lead, but, I started out a little rough on the first hole, was in two bunkers and took a bogey . The second hole I hit into a fairway bunker and was wondering if this was going to be one of those days you would rather forget. I had to chip out of the fairway bunker because of my lie and it left me with about 115 yards to the pin. I hit my 50 degree wedge to about 8 feet and hit the putt for par. I think this was the difference for me that day as I went on to win my flight by 6 shots. What is your best golf memory from the Senior National Championship? By far the best thing was seeing all the people I have met over the last couple of years again and meeting so many new people. The golf is great, but the people you meet and play with are what makes the Am Tour so much fun and rewarding. What is your "home" course? Dominion Valley Country Club, Haymarket in Virginia What ball do you play? Depending on the greens, I play either the Bridgestone e6’s or the Pro V1x. Favorite pro? Freddie Couples, the guy never seems to break a sweat, never seems to be upset, and he has one of the smoothest swings around. And for his age, he has still got some game. Favorite course you played at the Senior National Championship? As for this year, The Stadium Course was my favorite. Dye courses are tough as they make you work your way around the course instead of just banging away. I think the course rewards you for good shots and punishes you for bad play. Plus, playing a course that makes you keep one or two holes in the back of your mind for the entire round, like #17 Alcatraz, it is a mental challenge also. Dream course you've yet to play? Pebble Beach. The views are fantastic, the course is great, and the thought of playing 18 with a little something on the line would be a dream come true. Best round at the Senior National Championship - and what course? My first round this year. A 74 at the La Quinta Mountain Course. And that was with a double bogey and 3 – three putts. Give me an example of a time your SkyCaddie saved you a stroke at the Senior National Championship? There are too many examples to give where it saved me a stroke. The approaches into 9 and 18 on the Nicklaus Course, to carry the water to the green. The distance to the front of the green on #17 on the Stadium Course. Using my SkyCaddie to get perfect lay-up yardages into the par 5’s. I could go on all day about strokes saved by my SkyCaddie. I know this sounds like a commercial, but, it is the truth and I think any golfer that uses them would tell you just how valuable they are to their game. Tell me a story from the Senior National Championship. At the end of the tournament, many of the golfers from my flight gathered in the clubhouse for the awards and a beverage or two. They announced the top ten in our flight and there was hearty applause for everyone. When they announced me as the flight champion, I received a standing ovation from the other golfers and I must say, at that moment I had adrenalin pouring through my body. This act of kindness, respect, or whatever you would like to call it just exemplifies the type of men and women that are out here playing on the Am Tour. And I can only hope that I am there to share in their successes just as they did in mine. Interested in being next weeks featured golfer? email us here [ comments ]
