Suneil Aggarwal a.k.a. Suneil
Meet Suneil Aggarwal, one of the nine SkyCaddie Members to win at the 2011 Golf Channel Am Tour National Championship. Suneil's shot one day two of the Am Tour finale proves that sometimes, it's better to be lucky than good. Enjoy!
How old are you and what's your occupation?
I am 39 years old and I am the Vice President of Sales for Guest-Tek Interactive Entertainment.
When did you start playing golf and what's your handicap?
I started playing casually about 15 years ago but I started playing competitively 2 years ago. After my play at the National Championship, my handicap has dropped to 13.3.
How often do you play?
I play in a dozen or so Golf Channel Am Tour events each year, not much recreational golf outside of that other than a few charity scrambles.
Tell me about a great shot you made at the National Championship.
Some say you have to be lucky to be great or great to be lucky...in any case, holing out a blind greenside bunker shot has to rank right up there in both categories.
What was your best golf memory from the National Championship?
Defending my 2010 title. Last year was a rain shortened 3-round event so this year was about validation...knowing I have what it takes to get through four rounds and come out on top was a big victory for me.
What is your "home" course?
I do not have a home course I regularly play out of.
What ball do you play?
Varies. I played a Bridgestone TOUR B330-RXS at the National Championship.
I’m a fan of so many but right now I admire Jason Day. The kid has amazing game and is always in the mix at the top of a leaderboard. It is only a matter of time before he starts winning multiple majors.
Favorite course you played at the National Championship?
I really enjoyed playing the Nicklaus Tournament course on the final day. The 18th is set up for an interesting finish with water all the way up the right side and a well-guarded green. Needless to say, you have to think your way around that course and I enjoy that approach to the game.
Dream course you've yet to play?
Augusta National and I haven’t played it yet because I don’t know anyone who could invite me, but if you are out there reading this, I’m happy to accept an invite anytime!
Best round ever at the National Championship - and what course?
I carded an 80 on day one of the tournament this year on the La Quinta Mountain Course.
Give me an example of a time your SkyCaddie saved you a stroke at the National Championship?
The SkyCaddie is such an integral part of my game and while I can’t pinpoint a single shot, I will say that on day four it made the difference. I inadvertently forgot one of my wedges at the 9th or 10th hole. One of the tour officials went back to look for it and for the next 3 or 4 holes playing without it, my SkyCaddie made certain I didn’t put myself in the distance range of that wedge.
Tell me a story from the National Championship.
So many stories come out from a week like this but one that sticks out for me was my tee shot on the short par 3, water-front 7th hole on the Norman Course. It was day two and I was grinding my way around, nothing spectacular but not really costing myself too many shots. As I stepped up on the tee box, I hit one of my wedges a bit fat and right away called it short as it made its way towards the green and thought for sure it was wet. What happened next was nothing short of a one-in-million breaks...it hit directly square on top of a red hazard stake, bounced up and forward landing about 30 feet from the pin! At that point I knew I had something special working in my favor for the week, I mean come on, the top of a hazard stake. I’ll tell you it sure is great to be lucky!
