Tips for Installing SkyCaddie Updates
By mustang6560 on 6/21/10

POWER SETTINGS

A typical update takes between 5-25 minutes to download and install, depending on the size of the update and the speed of your Internet connection. The installation process may be interrupted if your computer goes into its standby mode before the update is complete.

IMPORTANT! If an update is interrupted for any reason during the installation process, it may cause a fatal error on the SkyCaddie which can make the device unusable. To avoid interruptions during an update, please note the following.

Before you update your SkyCaddie, we recommend adjusting your Power Options to avoid potential interruptions caused by a System Standby. We suggest changing the settings so your computer will not go into a System Standby for AT LEAST one hour.

To adjust power settings for Microsoft Windows:

  • Select Start > Control Panel

  • Select Power Options

  • Adjust the following:

    • Turn off hard disks > After 1 hour

    • System standby > After 1 hour

    • System hibernates > After 1 hour

To adjust power settings for Mac OS X:

  • Open your System Preferences menu

  • Select Energy Saver

  • Adjust the following:

    • Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for > 1 hour

    • Uncheck the option to > Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible.

After the update is complete, you may revert your Power Settings to their previous settings.

IMPORTANT! If you are using a laptop, we recommend that you plug it in to a wall outlet during the installation process, or confirm that your laptop’s battery is fully charged, before starting the SkyCaddie update process.

INTERNET CONNECTION

In order to install an update for your SkyCaddie, you must be connected to the Internet. We highly recommend that you do not download anything from the web or stream any media online while performing a SkyCaddie update. Below are 3 ways you may be set up to connect to the Internet

  • Wired Network Connection

For the best results, we highly recommend connecting your computer to the Internet through a wired connection to your router or modem. This provides a more reliable data transfer rate than any other method.

  • Wireless Connection (or Wi-Fi)

If you are on a wireless connection, make sure that your computer is close to the wireless router or access point so that the signal is strong. You can update your SkyCaddie software through a wireless connection if you are reasonably certain, based on past performance of your wireless connection, that the upload will not be interrupted. However, there is a risk that the wireless connection may drop, causing the update to time-out. This could cause an interruption which could lead to a failed installation.

  • Wireless Air Card

DO NOT use a wireless air card to update your SkyCaddie. A wireless air card does not provide adequate signal strength to allow the update to install properly and will almost certainly cause the update to time-out. We strongly discourage our members from using this form of internet connection.

FIREWALL SETTINGS

Please make sure you adjust your Firewall settings to add CaddieSync as an exception. If you do not, an update may automatically start but will be interrupted because the firewall will block the update from completing. Many firewalls will ask if you wish to allow the program to connect to the Internet; if that is the case with your firewall, simply click on “Allow”.

If you use any anti-virus or malware protection software that monitors Internet traffic, please refer to their instructions to allow CaddieSync to communicate online.
