Formerly known as the private Berkleigh Country Club, this course (designed by Robert White of Carnoustie, Scotland) is now open to the public. And while the marketing phrase "championship golf course" usually means the opposite, Berkleigh Golf Club can legitimately claim such a title, having hosted Betsy King's LPGA tour event from 1996 to 2004.

Walking is permitting on weekdays ($43 peak) and on weekends after 3:00 p.m. ($18). Junior, senior, and sliding twilight rates are available.

Don't know what all the hype is about. Rather play a muni. Great marketing to get you there though.

This was my first, and most likely only trip to the course. I got there and decided to go to the driving range to warm up. First off, the driving range grass area is like 50x50 yards, yet they left the teeing area in what looked like an abused stretch of grass. I couldn't really find grass to hit off of between the ropes and outside, saw nothing but beautiful fairway to hit off of. Secondly, 1/2 the balls in my bucket were completely dead pumpkins, and 1/4 were cut, so this was truely just a "swing and get loose" sort of range. I couldn't tell how i was hitting them because not a whole lot felt solid except for the cut ones.... which didn't go anywhere anyway.

The tees were fair to nice. At least they had grass on them. The greens were in sad shape though. They apparently had aerated them a week earlier and did a poor job at that. They were bare in some spots and overgrown in others, so getting the speed is not possible. Even some pitch and putt munis i play have even greens. They did not give a discount for the punch marks either, i might add. so i paid a full price $55 to play on this course (which is too much even if it WERE in good shape). There were 3 coolers with water on the course. I use the word "cooler" loosely, as the two that had water, had "shade temperature" water in them. I will also go so far as to say i wasn't keen on fighting the bees and flies for my water, since they mount the water coolers over the trash bins (which makes the water taste funny too).

The cart they gave us was about 3 bumps from falling apart. It kept pulling to one side. Apparently most of the carts do that? or so i'm told. Also, while they have 3 or so people (1 at the counter and two or 3 manning the carts that i saw) out to "greet" you, there's not a lot of greeting going on. And that's something that can make up for a lot of shortcomings on a course- but it just wasn't there. It's basically "here's your cart, go hit the ball". i didnt' really get the feeling that they care about the business they get there. I was talking with some patrons before i left and they seem to have an OK view of the place, but then again, there's not a whole lot of other courses in the area, so it's hard to tell what's really a review and what's them just being brainwashed by lack of competition. Unless you live near this place, just save your money and go elsewhere. For me, it's not worth the drive, even though i go right past it, and it's DEFINITELY not worth their primetime rate.

One good thing -- pace of play was actually good. we went off around 11 and got done in a little under 4 hours following people. Didn't really have to wait on any holes either.

Bunkers are in good shape, fairways and rough are decent. Scenery is just like every other course i've played in PA. trees and grass. nothing special. The ponds and water hazards are stagnant and smell. not good to look at either, and i definitely wouldn't want to try and retrieve a ball from them either for fear i may catch my death.

Played twilight on a weekend for $30. You can tell this is an old course by the huge trees lining every hole. A very nice layout and super value considering this was a private club for 80 years.
