The royal is an excellent course to play, the greens have 2 to 3 tiers so depending on pin locations 3 putts can occur. great views of mountains and oceans, would highly recommend to play if golfing on the island.

overall a great course but pricey, for both courses greens in great shape well maintained, would golf there again.

So, if you are capable of hitting the ball well and want more than a walk around the course, play the Royal Ka'anapali, stay away from the Kai course, it is more of an 'executive' course than a challenging course.
I really enjoy playing the Royal, the staff are excellent, the pro-shop staff are excluded since they are not nice or accommodating in any way, stay away from purchasing there!
The starters are excellent, they put together four or three balls and seem to be able to put together like skilled golfers pretty well. I don't mind playing with better golfers than me or worse golfers but, they seemed to put me with like-skilled golfers and it made the match enjoyable.
My personal tip for play is: if you hit your shot into a bunker that has red sand in it, take a rake and rake the bunker beneath your ball. For some reason they have really failed to maintain the level of sand in the traps, if you don't want to injure yourself or possibly damage your club; rake the trap beneath your ball. I am well aware of the implications it is just that I'm on vacation at a resort; there should be sand in the darn bunker!
There was only one Beer Girl servicing the Royal course and the midway snack shack was not manned. Brittany was the young woman on the bag, she was not lazy at all. I never wanted for a drink or snack and there were a lot of players on the course so 'cheers' for her service.
The bag-boys were great at picking up my gear before I played and awesome at cleaning them before I left for the day. They were enthusiastic about me being there and made me feel welcome.
The pro-shop jocks were angry about something and were not helpful or engaging. I did not make any comments about this being, "better than in the states" or in any way denigrate Maui or Hawaii so I don't know where their attitudes came from. They talked me out of buying a new golf club though so, maybe my wife was telling them not to serve me?
I enjoy playing golf at the Ka'anapali Golf Course and Country Club, I like it so much that I was very angry they were hosting the US Kids Golf, or whatever it's called, over the last three days.

What would you expect from a Maui beachfront course? Apart from the gorgeous views of Lana'i and Moloka'i the hospitality is total A-lo-haaa!
The Kai course is apparently the easier of the two so I played 3 rounds for the week. The fairways are very well groomed, the rough is a fluffy kind of Bermuda that can really grab your club but the ball tends to lie well. The greens are beatiful and well manicured. Breaks were really hard for me to read but the speed seemed pretty consistent.
I little tip, If you sign up at the Marriott to take their sales tour, they offer complimentary two rounds of golf at either Ka'anapali tracks as long as inventory lasts.
The on-demand snack cart and cool after-round towels are great. They will store your clubs for you if you wish and they give 'em a good scrub-down when you're done.
Man, I could get used to resort golf treatment.
