Georgia Southern University recently purchased the Southern Links Golf Course and began a top-to-bottom renovation. The new course is set to open in October 2013. With the magnificent hillside views and a creek meandering through the course, one can quickly settle into a peaceful round of golf. But don't become too relaxed as there are challenges galore. From the subtle breaking greens to the rolling contours of the fairways, there is something to challenge golfers of all calibers.

Rates shown are for the general public. Reduced rates are available for students, faculty/staff, military and seniors.

I could have given this course a 5-star rating for a number of reasons, but I feel 4-star is very fair. I used to play this course when it was Southern Links and I haven't played here in probably close to 15 years. I was blown away at the transformation.

I am a GSU Alumni and I am so proud of what GSU has done with this course. The changes to the layout have been well thought out and executed. The changes to the front 9 are outstanding. I especially love the change to 7 which used to be a par 5 and now making it a long & challenging par 3(#6) & a shorter shot making par 4 (new #7) that requires a precise shot into the green. My favorite holes on the front are the redesigned #5 & #6.

The back nine is basically the same layout as before, but vast improvements to the fairways, greens and bunkers make it so much better. The redesign of 10 was really thoughtful. The landing area on the par 5 11th seems to have been opened up. It being a sharp dogleg left, you can cut off some of the corner if you are feeling strong.

Course conditions are in a word fantastic. The fairways are superbly maintained. The greens on the day I played were hard and fast. I saw almost no encroachment of foreign grass on the greens. I only visited one bunker during my round and it was deep and well maintained. The course condition was the most surprising thing of all. The golf course staff at GSU have taken a course that was closed for sometime, in somewhat rough shape when it was open and have transformed it into something Statesboro should be proud of. There are not a lot of public access courses that someone can play in the area that will be better maintained.

Need to work on your game? This is the place to do it. While the driving range is a little short, it doesn't lack in quality. The teeing area is manicured fantastically with well placed target areas. The practice green is large and represents the conditions of the on-course greens very well. The bunker and pitching/chipping area is small, but as with the entire course in great shape for working on those delicate shots around the green. Just watch out for the occasional stray tee-shot from 10.

There were so many great things to say about this course it is hard to find much that would need improvement. If I had to pick out a couple things one would be that the cart paths need to be extended on a couple holes so you're not driving on a dirt path. This just gives the course a more polished and upscale feel. As much money and work that has been put into transforming this course into the little jewel it is, I wouldn't let a few yards of concrete be something that is lacking. Finish the deal. Finally, I would expect and hope for a better dinning/cafe area. It is basically a self-serve snack bar with very limited selection. A few more options would be welcomed. I don't know if the market would support it being full-service (at least part-time). That being said the dinning area is nice.

Statesboro and the surrounding area is so fortunate to have a course like this to play. I will definitely play it anytime I am in the area.

Course closed Jan 2009, still closed as of today Feb. 9, 2011. Greens all dead, fairways covered in weeds, etc.

The redesign is excellent, the greens are very challenging and still maturing (only 1 yr old). The Superintendent (Patrick) is doing an incredible job. Can't believe more golfers aren't playing this course.
