99 Quaker Meeting House Rd Farmingdale, NY 11735-1813 nysparks.state.ny.us/golf-cou... 516.249.0700 The most famous of the five courses here is the Black Course, which hosted the 2002 and 2009 U.S. Open Championships. The Black is a supremely tough A.W. Tillinghast design restored by Rees Jones in advance of the 2002 Open. In the early 1930s, the Bethpage Park Authority purchased the Lenox Hills Country Club (now the Green Course) and other adjacent properties to build what is now Bethpage State Park. A.W. Tillinghast designed and oversaw construction of the Black, Red and Blue courses, and modified the Lenox Hills Course (Green) course. With the increased demand for golf, the Yellow Course opened in 1958 and now 300,000 rounds are played annually on the five courses at Bethpage, all of which start from the clubhouse area. Average Hole Difficulty
Played in heavy rain. Had to walk - tough course made even tougher dragging my bag on a pull cart. Greens are exceptional, drained really well in heavy rain. Rough was tough. The Blue is probably the third best course at BP. Interesting layout with mix of dog legs and elevation changes. Course is long and pace of play is SLOW,SLOW, and SLOW, over 5.5 hours. Top 5 best course I've ever played - either private or public. Rates are very fair for the quality & conditions of a US Majors venue in a public setting. I try to play this course at least once a month. Absolutely one of the best Public course on Long Island. I have played the black and green course. the black you have to walk all up hill lol. the green you can take a cart. they are both great courses. Red Course: my favorite course ever. Nice tough track that's enjoyable to walk. No gimmicks. The sand bunkers suffer a bit but the greens are varied and there are a some risk/reward shots to be had: #9, #16 as examples. Bethpage could do better maintenance and putting a few rangers out there would limit the 6 hour rounds. The facility suffers in the State's hands. Bring your humble pie because after you play the Black course you'll be hungry for it. If you love the game you have to play this course it's not super nice but Oh Boy bring extra balls and your man pants. I played Bethpage Black, site of the U.S. Open and loved it. The one thing to note though is that it is a walking only course that changes elevation a good deal. The other courses on the State Park property looked fantastic and allowed cart use, so if you must ride- consider those- at a great value. Your Review
