DUSTIN JOHNSON'S BREAK UP

Dustin Johnson and the man on his bag, caddie/friend Bobby Brown, have called it quits after three years.

In a move that comes as a surprise, Brown and Johnson have split up. Brown, who is dating the sister of Johnson's girlfriend, initiated the dialogue and both have agreed it's better to move on. They started working together in the middle of Johnson's 2008 rookie season and have been together for four victories, including two AT&T National Pro-Ams and the 2010 BMW Championship.

I think this is for the best. It's easy to blame the caddie, but in Dustin's case, he refused to blame Bobby Brown for anything. After the two-stroke penalty for grounding his club in a "bunker" at the PGA Championship, Dustin took the heat - not Bobby. After the near DQ at the Northern Trust Open for missing his tee time, Dustin did not point any fingers. In either situation, it would have been easy to look at Bobby and say, "what the #$%^ dude!"

Hopefully, Dustin finds a caddie who views the player-caddie relationship more as a business arrangement and less as a friend. It's hard to do business with friends and family because it's not easy to tell someone you like "you're fired". Even in Dustin's case, Bobby had to be the one to cut ties.

Dustin has too much talent to not have a highly qualified guy on his bag. He needs someone who knows when to tell Dustin to shut up and listen and when to tell Dustin a joke to help him calm down. I'm not blaming Dustin's woes completely on his caddie. But I think having someone fresh will definitely help.
