Lexi Thompson Withdraws From Q-School By mustang6560 on 9/21/11
Check. And potentially checkmate.
Lexi Thompson, the Tiger Woods of 16-year-old female golfers, officially withdrew from the second round of the LPGA Q-School scheduled for next week. Lexi Thompson has withdrawn from next week's second stage of LPGA Q-School, her agent confirmed, adding that no deal has been reached regarding her LPGA membership. The young phenom destroyed the field by 10 strokes in the first round of Q-School so her decision to skip the remainder of the tournament is a brilliant power move. She is basically forcing commissioner Mike Whan to play his hand--either he will stick to his guns and deny Lexi membership because of her age, or he will give into the growing pressure and give the young talent a card for next year. She's already proved herself by dominating at Q-School AND with her victory at the Navistart LPGA Classic? Personally, I think the commish would be foolish to deny Lexi membership. The LPGA needs a young, really talented American player to help bring viewership (and money) to the struggling tour. According to the LPGA rules, a player must be 18 years old to gain membership on the tour (right, we got that), but a player under that age may petition for membership. The commis said he has not formally received a petition from Lexi's camp, but will make a ruling after he does. Lexi's agent said he will submit a petition after the completion of the Solheim Cup this week. The LPGA should borrow TNT's slogan for the next little while, "We know drama". It was a pleasure watching her play on TV. She should be given her card. Q school isn't necessary for her. 9/22/11
