The Players Championship is not a major championship, however, the PGA Tour's signature event does have the feel of a major championship - for several reasons.
The Field: Four of the top 5, nine of the top 10, and 22 of the top 25 players in the world are in the field at TPC Sawgrass. The three players who are missing include 2012 Masters Champion Bubba Watson (personal), 2011 Masters Champion Charl Schwartzel (personal), and Dustin Johnson (injury).
The Purse: The players in the field at the Players Championship will be competing for the largest purse on the PGA Tour - $9.5 million (the purse at the four majors is $8 million). The winning share is a cool $1.7 million.
The Golf Course: The Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass is one of the elite golf courses in the world. Pete Dye, who is one of the most well known course architects, designed a magnificent golf course, which includes one of the most famous golf holes - the Island Hole, #17. It may not be the most popular course, but it's definitely in the hearts and minds of every golf fan regardless of age or location.
Even though the Players is not a major (which is a technicality I'm sure the PGA Tour hopes to change), it has created some great moments through the years. And the PGA Tour has compiled the top 10 shots at the Players for your viewing pleasure.
