Over the last few years, the Woodstock Public Library in the northwest exurbs of Chicago has held a miniature golf fundraising event called the "Mini Links Golf Outing." This year's event takes place on Friday and Saturday; Friday night's "Library After Dark" event will include their 18-hole indoor putting course, along with hors d'oeuvres and drinks. Tickets are available only in advance at $25, and since alcohol is involved, attendees must be at least age 21. On Saturday, tickets are $5 (children aged 8 and under are $3) and the event runs from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Jami Kunzer of Planit Northwest previewed the event, which is organized by the Friends of the Woodstock Public Library. She notes that course begins at the 400-gallon fish tank, through meeting rooms, plays through an elevator, down a flight of stairs, and even into a toilet bowl. And library board member Gale Hoch loves that one of the sponsors is a bit unusual:

"The 19th hole is the last hole and sponsored by a funeral home. Every time I say that I go into hysterics. Who better to sponsor the final hole?"

Given that the upper-midwestern United States is suffering through the coldest winter in 31 years, the Woodstock Library Mini Links event seems to be coming at the right time.

Back in the day, when this writer was a lowly, humble, scum-of-the-earth technical support analyst for IBM, our managers set up a similar putting contest. My idea was for one hole to go from the 13th floor up to 14 via the elevator, with the next hole going back down to 13 via the stairwell. The managers shot down my idea. (Party poopers.) In contrast, it is gratifying to see that our friends in Chicagoland know how to have some fun.
