In the end, it was a pretty simple decision by the five-man selection panel. Frankly, we are surprised that 2014 European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley, 2012 captain José María Olazábal, 2010 captain Colin Montgomerie, former Ryder Cup player David Howell, and European Tour CEO George O'Grady took that long to decide upon Clarke.

As a Ryder Cup player, Clarke debuted in 1997 at Valderrama in Spain when the late, great Seve Ballesteros captained Europe to a 14½ - 13½ victory over the Tom Kite-led Americans.

But it was in 2006 that Clarke had his most memorable Ryder Cup, only six weeks after his first wife Heather passed away. Clarke went 3-0 that weekend at the K Club, including a 3 and 2 takedown of Zach Johnson in the Sunday singles. Team Europe defeated the Americans 18½ - 9½ that year.

Clarke was a vice captain in 2010 under Montgomerie, then served in a back-room "team services" role under Olazábal in 2012.

Without any question, Clarke has considerable playing and management background sufficient to qualify him to lead Team Europe when the next Ryder Cup matches at http://clubsg.skygolf.com/courses/course/9957/Hazeltine_National_Golf_Club.htmlHazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota on September 30, 2016.

What a thankless job, Ryder Cup Captain. I wish Darren well and Davis, also.
