The club dates to 1886, although the present course opened in 1897 with a design by the club's first head professional, George Lowe. The legendary architect Harry S. Colt oversaw some minor changes in 1919. Royal Lytham has hosted two Ryder Cups and ten Open Championships, most recently Ernie Els' stunning victory on July 22, 2012.

During the summer, the walking rates on weekdays are £165/round or £247/double round. The Saturday rate is £247/round, while the Sunday rate is £165. During the winter, those rates are £123/round or £184/double round.

The Open Championship is to be held here in 2012 and we got it on a very wet day which was a test. The bunkering is stunning and as we played from the Red tees (just shy of 7000yds) we got a taste of what the pros face. Awesome course that you have to play.
