Definitely my least favorite of all of the courses that I played in Ireland. The course was very flat. The dunes were small and the bunkers (mostly pot bunkers) were small and unimpressive.
The course also only had one par 3 and one par 5 on the front, and I'm not a huge fan of par 4s. I view them as being less distinct. In fact, many of the par 4s at Portmarnock seemed very similar to each other, with the direction the wind was blowing being the only differentiating characteristic.
I'm puzzled how this course is a top 100 in the world course. Number 44 at that. It must be the history of the course I guess. It actually kind of makes me lose faith in that list. The course was a snoozefest.
The clubhouse was actually quite pleasant, and the fact that the course was just outside of Dublin was nice, but overall it was definitely the least impressive course of all the courses I played (Ballybunion Cashen Course, Ballybunion Old Course, Royal Portrush, Royal County Down, Ardglass, Druids Glen). Like most of the other courses I played in Ireland, the condition was not nearly as good as I would have expected it to be considering the hefty green fees.
