85 and very humid. Sunny with a breeze around 10+ mph. Fairways were very firm. Similar to what one might find on a links course - lots of roll and firm tight lies. Greens were receptive and slow (almost fuzzy).
Started on #10. It was slow but I walked slow and sat under a tree while waiting.
If I were to describe the round in two words it would be "bad lies". Several times I just missed the fairway by less than a foot and found myself in a little depression between some clumpy grass. Almost impossible to get a clean hit on the ball. Or I would find hard pan when I needed a delicate pitch over an obstacle. Or my drive would run through the fairway, forcing me to work a shot around some trees. I really had to grind to make up for the bad bounces and goofy lies.
My disaster on #12 resulted from not playing/practicing flop shots. Had to go over a small tree for my 3rd shot after rattling my approach off the trees next to the green. Decided to be clever and hit a flop shot. Flopped it over the tree but was short of the green. Well, I think, why not try that again? Nice and high but still short. Chip on too aggressively and 2 putts make "7". I need to practice that shot more before I use it on the course.
