Balmy after torrential rains came in yesterday and last night. Cart path only. Very soggy course. (I hate soft fairways.) Wind was howling. 20-25 knots, gusting higher. Didn't expect much in the way of score as a result, but surprisingly did okay.
Put my brandy-spankin' new Titleist AP2-716 irons (and new AP1-716 5i and 6i) into play for the first time today. Hard to really tell how good they are with the tough conditions out there today. Wasn't disappointed, but due to so many long approaches, didn't really get much chance to use the shorter irons, which are normally the part of my game that give me a chance. Only remember hitting one 9i, onto green on 10th. No PW shots, no 8i or 7i shots were required either. Hit a 5i off tee on 13 and a 6i off tee on 16, both par 3s, GIRs on both.
Played with Richie. It was good to be back at Oxford Greens after nearly three weeks away. Was reminded many times today why it is such a tough course, yet was playing well enough to get through most tough spots. The wind made things more difficult than normal and consequently, had a lot of long approaches with little chance to reach. Played 2 extraa clubs on many holes into the wind and it still wasn't enough at times. Sunk a 25 foot bomb on 6th for bird. Greens were recently aerated and were bumpier than in past aerations for some reason. They also rolled a little slower than usual too.
Driver worked for the most part. Missed a few more fairways than normal, but the misses were just off a little on most, and I was hitting the ball with less effort.
On 18th, hit a great drive down the middle, but the ball bounced funny and ended up next to mid-fairway pot bunker on the right side. My stance was extremely awkward for the approach shot, having to stand on the steep side hill of the pot bunker with the ball way above my feet. I knew it was going to be a dicey swing, having to balance perfectly without falling back into the bunker. So, I wasn't surprised when I topped the ball and still fell back into the bunker on my follow through. Only real poor shot of the day, but I expected it due to the lie, so wasn't too upset.
Was quite sore late in the round. Back, hips and shoulders. Hope I can play tomorrow and Saturday without too much discomfort. Don't have my ice packs here in CT to calm things down. Will depend on Advil I guess. Supposed to be much colder by tomorrow. Only 52 on Saturday.
DougEly says:Right now, my body is having a hard enough time with 18. I'm really sore for some reason lately.
