Perfect day, considering it's the middle of November. Light wind, sunny, near 70 degrees. The course was nearly empty. When I pulled in to the parking lot I thought maybe they were closed for some reason. There were definitely more staff there than there were golfers. I felt like I had the whole place to myself. The course conditions are still perfect.
I was in the right frame of mind when I realized there was no rush whatsoever. Started on first without really warming up. Wasn't the best drive, but I made a good up and down and set the tone for a good round. Made two poor shots the whole round, and neither hurt me all that bad, though, score would have probably been at least a stroke better had I hit better shots with those two swings.
Felt in control, with lots of confidence standing over most shots. Worthington has really grown on me. The great conditions make it a pleasure to play.
Bad shot on 13 after driving into fairway bunker, one of the few fairways I missed. Ball below feet in bunker. Topped it. Still had a reasonable chance to save par after 52 degree wedge approach to 8 feet, but missed it right by a touch.
Driver was off a touch, though not by much, most of the round. Just kept missing the sweetspot by the slightest amount. Still hit it straight, but felt like distance could have been better on a bunch of drives. Some weren't bad, and a few were pretty damn good. Missed one badly on 7th. Popped it up and barely made the fairway. But recovered well, hitting 4W onto green and getting down in two. It was that kind of day. 3-putts were my biggest downfall. Irons were on. Really enjoying these new AP2-716s. Hitting them better than my old AP2-712s. Had 4 or 5 realistic birdie attempts from less than 15 feet, but couldn't drop any of them. The one birdie I did card was from about 25 feet. Not complaining, but I feel like I left too many strokes out there relative to the quality of ballstriking I displayed today.
On 16th, I figured something out I had been lacking with the driver all day and hit a 250 yard perfect draw. Well, actually it wasn't perfect because it rolled into left rough. But the ball fight was as perfect as I could ask and exactly what I was trying to accomplish. Had 120 to the pin and was expecting to throw a dart with my 9 iron. Hit it pin high, but pulled it, left of the green. Flopped a shot to 7 feet, below the hole, but missed the par-saver. That hurt.
Overall, as good a ballstriking day as it was, I am quite disappointed the score didn't show it in the end, the way it seemed to be shaping up earlier in the round. 3-putts were the biggest score killer.
CeeBee says:That's what I'm talking about. Great round.
