Played from the blue tees again. Sure not hitting enough greens, but my short game continues to keep me scoring well, just the same. Not quite as satisfying only hitting 5 greens today, but I got up and down like never before. 2 of 2 sandys. And chipping was phenomenal. Felt like I could get it close no matter what the lie. Combo of 50, 54 and 58 degree wedges, all right on the money nearly every try.
Hit driver okay. Was trying some things and got in trouble on 9th, catching it way out on the toe as a result of one of the attempted moves I tried to make. It wasn't pretty. Ended up over on the 6th tee. Then had a bad lie on the front side of the #6 black tee and just did not get much of the ball. All top spin. It only made it into the fairway bunker. Then compounded the situation by trying to hit the hero shot out with a 5W. Too much sand, not enough ball. Only made it 150 yards. Now, lying 3, and still 188 out, decided to try an all or nothing 5W again. Should not have attempted it as it was a downhill lie and I was not comfortable over the ball. But, it was the only chance I had to have a chance at par. Of course, it went into the hazard. Finally took double and tried to forget about the hole.
That one hole was really the only bad hole of the day, even though I doubled the 3rd as well. I just played it poorly from start to finish. On my double of the third, I had a good drive, I made a good layup exactly as planned, but my simple 70-yard pitch with a 58 degree wedge to the pin came up a little short, only going about 58 yards, not quite making it onto the green, requiring a chip and 2-putt. That chip was one of the few today that did not get real close, though it wasn't terrible.
On 18th, hit a real nice drive, real good 5w and then had 8i distance to pin. Hit the 8 iron right at the pin, but it was coming out of island of rough between left and right fairways on 18th. Hit right next to pin, but no stopping from the rough. Rolled off the side of the green, just into the rough. Only not so great chip of the day. 2-putt bogey. Another GIR miss.
Other than my bastardization of the 9th, I really have no big complaints about the rest of the round. Made a lot of lemonade out of lemons, just should have hit more greens. Iron play continues to be good. Wedge play exceptional today.
