Kinda cold. Low 40s with some wind.
Played pretty well today. Started strong, on the back. Parred the 12th again. That's always a real positive. Then on 13 hit a long drive and a 3W which reached the green and rolled just off, about pin high. SHOULD have chipped it for the eagle try, but I thought I might be able to putt it. It had a foot of low rough to get through before reaching the green. I hit it too hard and blew it 6 feet by the hole. Then 2 putted from there for a plain old par. What's worse, after holing out, I dropped the ball in the same place alongside the green, same lie and tried again with my 58 degree wedge like I should have in the first place. Chipped it in. Son of a bitch! Hate blowing realistic eagle opportunities. Don't get them very often.
Continued to play par golf until 17th, when I hit a good 6 iron, but drew it a touch, into the greenside bunker pin high at the back of the green. Made a nice sand shot to about 4 1/2 feet, but missed what should have been an easy putt to save par. First bogey on the back. Then hooked up with Gene, the cart guy on the 18th and lost my concentration a bit. Good drive, good 3W, but for the second day in a row, hit lob wedge a little thin and ended up in bunker on the right back side of green. . Again, made a nice play out of the bunker to about 6 feet and AGAIN, missed the easy putt to save par.
On first, put approach in the bunker, about pin high. Made a nice play out again, and this time made an 8 footer to save par.
Continued to play the tough front starting holes well. I am usually happy with any score under 20 on those first 4 holes. Today, it was 16. Parred them all. Best shot of day was an uphill 3W bullet, hit directly on line, for GIR on 3rd hole, leaving it about 7 feet left of pin. Having a realistic birdie chance on 3 is very unusual for me. #1 handicap. And should be.
Blew my round on the par 5 5th after a good drive which left me just off the fairway in the left rough. Had a bit of a downhill lie. Rather than try to get real close with a 3W, I wanted a 70-90 yard shot so I could take a full swing with my 58, or 54. So, I played a 5 iron out of the rough and caught it way off center. Don't think I moved it 100 yards. Then a long shot over the green, 3 yards off the back. Decent chip, but there was no way to get it close based on the tough pin position, unless it hit the flag and went in. I got it pretty close, but still two-putted for double. Then bogeys on 6 and 7. Hit a good drive on 7th which got over the first fairway bunker, but bounce left when it landed, into the farther fairway bunker. Had a high lip and went with a more lofted club to make sure I got over it. It wasn't enough to get to the green. Nice chipitch, but two-putt bogey.
On 8th, into the wind and up the steep hill, I played 3 extra clubs. Hit 5W, and now realize that is the club I should have been hitting to this location for the last couple weeks since it was moved there. I finally had enough club. I could not have hit it any better. I was sure I hit it over the green, but found it on the back of the green, about 7 yards past. Tough putt, but got down in 2 for par.
On final hole, (9th) great drive, 8 iron layup, then went a little right with 54* approach, into right bunker. Perfect shot out to 6 inches to save par. I'm still pissed about the eagle miss and the double on 5.
