Wanted to get in a round before the heavy wind and rain which was forecast. Finished in 2 1/2 hours. Wind built as round went on, but never got bad until after the round.
Started off on the same path as yesterday. After the first 4 holes was thinking today wasn't going to be any better than my atrocious round yesterday. But kept my foot on the gas and things started to turn around. It was an ugly start on first after a good drive and over-cooked 5W into left bunker. Got way too much ball with the bunker shot and sent it 20 yards over the green. Made a decent pitch back but couldn't save a bogey. Double. Just like yesterday's start. Oh boy.
Hit a good drive on 2, but again, over cooked approach left. Then made a weak pitch back up the steep hill barely making the green. Bogey. I thought I might have a long day ahead, but started to put some things together and salvaged a 43 on the front. Played the back much more confidently. Birdied the 11th from my worst drive of the day. Landed way up in deep fescue grass on the mound behind the right fairway bunker. Chopped it out with a GW to about 12 feet and made the straight uphill putt.
Was in a bunch of bunkers today, and did not play either the greenside or fairway ones all that great. On 7, hit a good drive which I thought was going to be well clear of the fairway bunkers, but with the wind blowing it back just enough, it caught the far lip and rolled back in, leaving me 150 yards to the green. Had an okay lie, but only got enough of the ball to reach the right greenside bunker. Was far out in the bunker, on a bit of a downslope. Didn't get it far enough and hit the lip and fell back in. Got out, but not close on the next one. Ended with a 6, 3 strokes of which were bunker shots--1 fairway, 2 greenside.
Hit it to 5 feet on the tough par 3 8th, but babied the birdie putt and left it a foot under the hole.
A bunch of really nice drives today. Only one or two irons were not good. Fatted layup on 9th after a really great drive, so then, thankfully, made a 155 yard approach with a 6i onto the green to about 25 feet. The two pars on 8 and 9 kicked off a good back nine.
Though it wasn't a very good round, it was a lot better than yesterday's debacle.
Cold and windy forecast for tomorrow, with snow flurries Friday. May be a few days before I can get back at it.
