Cool.High 40s-low 50s. Overcast. Played with my new buddy Bernie. We played from the blue tees on most holes, but from the white tee boxes on holes where the blue tees were on the black tee boxes. Didn't hit many greens as a result of the much longer yardage, but short game kept me in it.
Driver was okay, but only hit 2 or 3 real nice drives that drew. Most other drives were straight, with a tiny bit of cut tail, losing me a few yards of distance.
Played the 3rd poorly. Drive left me an awkward stance half in and half out of the right fairway bunker with the ball at nearly waist height. Made a baseball swing and nearly went right under it. Basically was a flop shot with a hybrid. Then hit a 6i all the way to the back of the green and off. Really nice chip to 1 foot and a tap in.
On 5th was way down deep in tall fescue after 2nd shot, right of fairway bunker, 110 out and up steep hill. Playing about 120. Ball way below feet and sitting up high. Risk of going right under it. Hit it flush, to 8 feet from the pin. Bernie said it was the kind of recovery shot you see on the PGA Tour. I have to admit, I impressed myself with both the swing I put on it and the result. Should have made the birdie putt but read a right to left break which never materialized. Good speed, but left it 6 inches right of the hole. Still a great par.
On 9th, approach came up short in the deep weeds of the hazard. Played out of the hazard with 58* pitch to 6 feet and made the big breaking putt to save par.
Could have been a better day if I played from the whites, but need to start getting ready for the longer distances once all the tees go back to normal distance and the GHIN posting season starts.
