BIRDIE 2 BOGEY JUNE MAJOR (2 OF 4)
Berkshire Valley Golf Course was a great venue to hold one of Birdie 2 Bogey's major championships. A challenging course that requires great tee shots, especially on the first 5 holes. The weather was very warm - hazy, hot, and humid in the mid 90s. Course conditions were very well maintained and the greens were fast.
We had a total of 18 golfers playing at the major, with Joey and Mike representing out in Cali:
1st Group: Marlon, MikeA, and Steve
2nd Group: Ahj, Carluen, Jay Vill
3rd Group: Derrick, Marc, GaryB, Mike Mac
4th Group: Me, Matt, Jon, Rando
5th Group: JKwock, CG, Hai, Gary (Hai's Guest)
New B2B member Matt experienced his first major and got a feel for the competitive, yet friendly atmosphere first hand. The front 9 was very intimidating, but he settled down a bit on the back 9. I have to mention 2 things about his round - 1) he was NUTTING his driver with a sick draw he said he discovered down in myrtle (avg distance 250 yards). 2) he had the first ever EAGLE 2 BOGEY on the infamous 14th hole par 4; I'mma call him "E2B" for a while.
Rando was great company in our group. The highlight of his day was by far winning Closest to the Pin on the 6th hole par 3 with his 4 iron to go 187 yards - using the hill to the right and having it roll onto the green. WHAT A SHOT!
Jon had the round of his life. He shot a sick 66 net score, claiming the championship title. He owes it all to Rando; which now means Jon will always want to have Rando as his partner for every major championship going forward LOL... a birdie on a tough 7th hole par 5 (535 yards) gave him confidence going into the back 9. A memorable hole on the 14th hole par 4 went like this - 4 hybrid off the tee 200 yards, a shank short of the green, a flub misshit that goes 6 inches still in the rough, and then a chip in for par... WHAT A WAY TO GET A PAR! of course, the pressure got to him once he lost his tee shot on the 16th hole, realizing he could actually win. Even though he tried to give 1st place away with his 2 max pars on 17 and 18, he still won with a 99 (net 66)... congrats! I will now buy me a box of bridgestone e6s! I am a believer!
I didn't start off well, I was +10 over after the first 3 holes! LOL... but I will only focus on the positives of my round:
1) 5 pars - 4 of them were with putts over 10 feet
2) I had TWO birdie 2 bogey holes on the 15th and 16th holes (OH YEAH!)
3) I hit 71% fairways on the back 9 (mostly due to keeping the driver in the bag all day and using my 3 wood instead)
Here's a summary of the Major winners:
1st place - Jon 65 net
2nd place - Ahj 71 net
Random 2 Man winners:
MikeA 73 net + Carluen 80 net (thanks for flying from North Dak!)
Longest Drive winners:
Steve and Carluen
Closest 2 the Pin winners:
Rando and Marlon
The winner of the next Major in August will be grouped with the last 3 Major champions (Me, JayV, Jon)
Special thanks to Marlon for setting up everything for the Berkshire Major
If you haven't already done so, please submit your dues by the August Major
Please let us know what you thought about this Major and feel free to provide some feedback so we can make our group the most fun and competitive group out there...
Ok guys, I'll be on a mini-retirement from golf and hope to join you guys soon... i do have 13 official rounds in the books so I am hoping to be in the running for the Points Race for the Cup... and of course I'll be at the final major in the fall to put the next Green Jacket on the next winner... FUN!
