Decent round. Played with Bernie. We got hooked up with 2 guys, Justin and Glen, from a private club near Baltimore. Both good players and both long off the tee. We all played the blue tees, but they could have easily played the blacks. They were 40-50 yards further with driver than me or Bernie. Didn't matter though. Worthington Manor ate them up! Glen was ready to blow a gasket after doubling his 4th par 3 of the day on 17th. Bernie and I wished we had their distance, but they commented that they wished they had our accuracy. I guess the grass is always greener.
I got off to a so-so start, though did make a nice birdie on 2nd after sticking my 7 iron approach to 5 feet. Was having some trouble with the speed of the greens since they had just cut and rolled them, after last evening when they were slower than normal. Took me half the front to adjust. Didn't hit the ball poorly at all, but got in a few sticky situations on the front, the worst of which resulted in a penalty on 9th, after a great 2nd shot, which rolled into thick rough just off the fairway. Should have been an easy approach in, but too much thick rough equaled not enough club on the ball or club head speed, resulting in a weak shot that didn't clear the hazard. Then a drop and a flyer which got stuck in the back green fringe rather than rolling down the slope as expected towards the pin.
Played the back better after a pop up on 10th, on which I was able to salvage bogey. Should have birdied 11 but settled for par as the putt lipped out. Nice up and down pars on 12 and 13. Game was solid on the back overall. Kept hearing it from Justin and Glen. I did screw up an easy 9 iron approach on 14th. My favorite club. Needed an extra yard or two to get it there and think I went at it too hard and missed the center of the clubface. Instead I skulled it. At least it went straight leaving me a little pitch shot, which I tried to flop, but went a bit long. Par saver was close, but no cigar. Bogey.
To make a 39 on the back, I really needed to par the 18th. I hit my worst drive of the day due to that little bit of extra pressure, caught a tree limb and it fell woefully short, in the rough. Hit a great 5W out of it, but still had 160 to the pin. Hit a 6i to 10 feet and pulled off the par.
