The late William "Bill" Powell (1916-2009) won the 2009 PGA of America Distinguished Service Award. Why? Because against unfair barriers and pressure, he became (and reportedly still is) the only African-American man to found, design, and build a golf course in the United States.

He built the first nine between 1946 and 1948; the second nine opened in 1978. The course is (fittingly) now on the National Register of Historic Places.

We played early in the season. The course was in good shape but the greens were very slow. Very nice people run the course.
