The club was founded in in 1875; only a handful of clubs in Scotland are older than Elie. The interesting opening hole has a blind tee shot that requires the starter to use a 30ft periscope from HMS Excalibur to ensure the way is clear.
James Braid was born in nearby Earlsferry and took up the game at this course; he once said that the 13th here was "the finest in all the country." Holes 6-14 run out to sea and reek of links character.
The Elie and Earlsferry Ladies Golf Club shares the course and building with the golf House Club but the two clubs remain independent and the Ladies' Comittee works closely with the Golf House Club Committee to improve the facilities for all members and guests.
